The C7 Stratus SIG, and a $100 DIY ADS-B receiver

For those of us who take longer trips or operate under IFR, the availability of up-to-date in-airplane text weather and NEXRAD imagery over ADS-B has been a sea change in terms of the ability to react to developing weather. The availability of traffic information has likewise improved situational awareness in our busy airspace. Like many things in aviation, the main barrier to adopting this new technology has been cost. Certificated, installed systems cost into the thousands, and the $550-$900 cost of portable systems is still a major hurdle for most. About three years ago, the response of several Cloud 7 ForeFlight users was to do something that came very naturally to cost-conscious flying club members: form another club! And thus, the Stratus SIG (special interest group) was formed. Today, the Stratus SIG consists of just under half of of the total Cloud 7, and owns a set of Stratus 2 ADS-B receivers. For about $200, any Cloud 7 member can buy into the SIG. This entitles them to reserve a Stratus just as they would reserve an airplane, and use it in any Cloud 7 aircraft. Recently, Reddit and various aviation message boards have been abuzz over the development of a $100 DIY ADS-B In receiver compatible with most of the popular EFB apps, including ForeFlight, WingX Pro, Naviator, and Avare. By combining a $35 Raspberry Pi 2 computer, a $21 RTL-SDR (software defined radio), and under $50 of other components, you can build a portable 978 MHz ADS-B receiver, capable of receiving both weather and traffic (978 ADS-B Out aircraft and ADS-R/TIS-B ground station rebroadcasts) and sending it...

Pushing the envelope

In December 2014, we installed a new Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) on both of our 182Qs. The “Fresh Pick” STC from Trolltune increased the maximum gross takeoff weight (MGTOW) from 2950 to 3100 pounds, with no added parts and no modifications to the airframes. How? Cessna certified the later 182R model to a 3100 pound MGTOW, and Trolltune invested in a multi-year FAA engineering, flight test, and certification program to prove that the P and Q model 182s were similar enough to justify the MGTOW increase. Note that this does not increase the maximum gross landing weight, which remains 2950 pounds. Preflight planning for the 182s when operating at takeoff weights above 2950 pounds will need to account for fuel burn to ensure that normal operations will land at or below 2950 pounds. This will normally not be a concern for flights two hours or more in length. In an emergency situation, the aircraft can be safely landed overweight; the main gear alignment will just need to be inspected by an A&P before the aircraft is returned to service. Where the Fresh Pick STC will really come into its own is for long trips with three or four people on board. Many of our members fly with their families, and the extra 150 pound capacity will make available flights that would not have been possible without it. Consider a family of four flying to Denver in N96418. This is a 600 NM trip, about 4.5 hours with no winds. Planning at 13.5 gallons per hour leaves a very comfortable two hour fuel reserve. Inner beauty

N96418, our 1978 Cessna 182Q, is a fantastic airplane. A Horton STOL kit gives it great short field performance, and long range tanks make it a cross country champ. Its engine, though several years since its last overhaul, has maintained the compressions of a young engine, and runs remarkably smooth. Its Apollo avionics stack and STEC autopilot were complemented by a new GTN 650 earlier this summer. However, it was not a very attractive looking airplane. Until January, it still had its original paint and interior. The old, weather-beaten exterior was stripped and repainted January to protect the airframe against corrosion and to refresh the Carter-era look. We originally planned to replace the interior in late Spring 2014, but ended up taking a strategic delay to avoid cutting into the summer flying season. 418 finally went into the maintenance hangar in early October, and its interior was stripped down, literally to bare metal. Old upholstery, carpeting, insulation, and trim were removed. Seats were stripped down to their frames, and reconditioned before the new foam and coverings were applied. Plastics were repaired and repainted, and four weeks later, a clean, modern look...

We own two hangars at Flying Cloud Airport, complete with a heated maintenance hangar, and a newly renovated club room. Our club room is equipped with an ATC 610 certified instrument ground trainer; personal computer with DUATS weather briefing access, flight planning and flight simulation software; television and telephone.  A perfect place for your flight briefing, planning and training.
